The rally, held at Howard's Cramton Auditorium, included leaders from the student association, campus NAACP and divinity school, according to news reports, as well as Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., above. Another 200 people were outside, as the auditorium was filled to capacity. The students have set a goal to raise $20,000 to assist the six students and their families.

The rally generated more than $8,500, and more funds are being raised. No definite plans are set for Howard students to travel to Jena, but meetings are being held to facilitate travel arrangements for students and organizations interested in showing their support in person.

The trip will be similar to an Alternative Spring Break trip to New Orleans this past spring, according to Will Roberts, vice president of the Howard University Student Association.

He also said students from the Howard University School of Law are looking to get involved with the trip and facilitate portions of the administrative work.

"The goal is to get somebody down there," Roberts said. As "substantial [a] number as possible."
