Apps are taking over the world one mobile device at a time and Morehouse is the next target.  Tiger Mobile has been available for download for all Apple and Android devices since Sept. 15.

Tre’Von McKay, a sophomore dual degree physics and civil engineering student, from Omaha, Neb., designed Tiger Mobile.  The idea for a mobile application was born during the 2010 - 2011 school year when the Student Government Association President Travis Randle expressed the need for it.

“I heard about this [idea] and I took it upon myself to start to develop the app for Morehouse,” McKay said.

The application currently allows students to access grades, finances, schedules, campus maps, the SGA website and The Maroon Tiger.  McKay would also like it to include a mobile book exchange system.

“My concern last year was that Morehouse and the SGA were not effective in mass communications,” President Randle said.  “We simply didn’t know how to get vital info to students in a relatively short time frame.”

McKay has been developing websites since the seventh grade, and he began making apps last October.

“The hardest part for me is the user interface and the graphic design, how people want to click on things,” McKay said.  “Once I come up with that I use Photoshop or Fireworks to create a rough image.”

McKay’s future projects include designing a website for the MBA, Morehouse’s NAACP chapter and an event-based HBCU application.  He’s also considering using the revenue generated from Tiger Mobile to create the app for Blackberry users.

When asked what brought him to the world of web design, McKay laughed and answered, “I was trying to get rich.”
